Ianis Hagi question lingers with time running out for Rangers to activate clause

As recalled loan players everywhere make headlines across the footballing world, Rangers fans will note the tumbleweed surrounding Ianis Hagi.

The Romanian playmaker, 25, is currently out on a season-long switch to Alaves in La Liga with club insiders Heart & Hand revealing the Gers do have a recall option on the loan.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement also claimed the Ianis Hagi situation was a decision for the entire club to make in an interview with Turkish media.

But as the likes of Liverpool recall Owen Beck, Southampton recall Thierry Small, and Brighton recall Jeremy Sarmiento, there’s not been a sniff around Rangers and Ianis Hagi.

Rangers yet to activate Ianis Hagi loan clause

Whilst we’re not sure if the Rangers recall clause has an expiration date this January, there isn’t much out there to suggest the club will act.

Murmurs around a Sam Lammers exit suggests that there will be space for a number 10 in the squad in the second half of the season.

But with Rangers also securing a loan deal for Fabio Silva, there might be some juggling to be done on the wage bill if the club are serious about taking Ianis Hagi back from Alaves.

However, when you look at the lay of the land and the lack of conversation around a potential return, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that we’ll see Ianis back this season.

Does Alaves playmaker have Ibrox future?

What the future holds for Ianis Hagi however, is another story altogether.

Having just returned from a cruciate ligament injury the Romanian international playmaker pushed for a move out of Michael Beale’s squad in the summer.

Now getting regular minutes with Alaves on the continent, all the sounds coming out of the midfielder’s camp is that Spain looks to be his preferred permanent home.

And yet only last season did Ianis Hagi sign a contract extension at Rangers – tying him to the club until 2026 – whilst Alaves do not boast an option to buy on the player.

Consigned to substitute appearances as of late – most recently coming off the bench against the mighty Real Madrid – it remains unclear if the Spaniards will cough up.

It means that unless the Spanish side agree a fee in the summer, the Romanian could be returning to Ibrox after starring for his country at Euro 2024.
