Liverpool have rejected a Rangers advance for returning Dundee loanee Owen Beck – as St Mirren counterpart Thierry Small is recalled by Southampton.
Rangers and Old Firm rivals Celtic are both reportedly on the hunt for a new left-back and both were linked with a move for 21-year-old Beck following a return to Anfield this week.
The young Welshman has been on inspired form in the Scottish Premiership this season and left a big impression at Dundee during his six months at the club.
But as it has transpired, Liverpool need to keep Academy left-back Owen Beck around amid a shoulder injury to Andy Robertson and a collarbone issue with Kostas Tsimikas.
Liverpool reject Rangers Owen Beck advance
The Scottish Sun are reporting that both Rangers and Celtic made enquiries about taking Owen Beck instantly back to Scotland but these have been rebuffed by Liverpool.
The youngster is now set to be handed a chance by the Premier League leaders and that means Old Firm attentions will have to turn elsewhere.
Rangers have been linked to a number of left-backs already in this transfer window with substantial upheaval mooted in the position.

Currently injured Borna Barisic is out of contract at the end of the season whilst questions remain over the squad status of Turkish international Ridvan Yilmaz.
As a result, Owen Beck is one of four left-backs linked to Rangers, joining Kai Wagner, Fredrik Oppegard, and Josh Doig in being mentioned as Philippe Clement looks to strengthen his team.
Ibrox-linked left-back Thierry Small
Rangers fans following the club’s left-back pursuit will also take notice of Southampton recalling Thierry Small from a short-term stint with St Mirren.
It’s just been announced that the English Championship have recalled the 19-year-old after an impressive first half of the season in Paisley.
Rangers were strongly linked with a move for Thierry Small in the summer window and one wonders if the Ibrox side could resurrect their interest in January.
Having already gotten to grips with the Scottish Premiership, a short-team deal for Small could shore up what has proven an inconsistent position in Govan.
