Rangers target three positions in transfer market as Philippe Clement strengthens squad

Rangers fans have been waiting patiently for new signings this summer.

Now several might be about to come along at once. Or at least close together.

As Rangers prepare to kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign against Hearts, and the squad registration deadline for Champions League QR3 looms, the club’s transfer hunt is stepping up.

And with one new signing edging closer to the Rangers Training Centre, the Ibrox club are continuing their transfer hunt in two crucial positions.

Rangers close on Pröpper signing

It’s no secret that Rangers are closing in on a deal for FC Twente captain Robin Pröpper.

The 30-year-old centre-back has been signposted as a replacement for Connor Goldson, who has left the club for Aris Limassol this summer.

Pröpper has links to several players in the Rangers squad and the club’s swoop for the defender could wind up costing the Gers somewhere in the region of £2.7m.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been clear that experience is the order of the day at this stage in the window with the Gers targeting first-team players who can come in and make a difference now.

With that in mind, Pröpper could come straight into the squad for the trip to face Hearts at Tynecastle and is expected to be a key player this season.

The defender has arrived in the UK and is undergoing a medical ahead of his unveiling as a Rangers player.

Whilst it’s never done until the scarf is hoisted high above a player’s head, a deal for Pröpper is very much in the post.

Experienced number 6 tops transfer wishlist

Attentions will then turn to two other key positions where Rangers are actively hunting for reinforcements.

It’s clear that Rangers want an experienced midfielder to fill the number 6 void at the club following the departure of John Lundstram in the summer.

There have been several high profile pursuits which have so far proven fruitless for Rangers.

A deal for Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean was ruled out by the player himself whilst there is come confusion over interest in Sevilla star Joan Jordan.

Whilst the Spanish player’s camp claim Jordan didn’t reject a move to Rangers, the Ibrox side have told friendly journalists they’ve ended their interest.

The latest midfield name being linked to Rangers is former Dutch international Marco van Ginkel.

The 31-year-old is a free agent following his release from Vitesse Arnhem and certainly follows the Dutch theme at Ibrox after the appointment of new assistant Andries Ulderink.

There has been some conflicting reports around a Rangers deal for Van Ginkel but the ex-Chelsea midfielder certainly appears to fit the bill in terms of experience.

Rangers to spend big money on attacker?

The other area where Rangers are actively trying to improve their squad is the final third.

Whilst the club is open to adding another striker amid links to Lawrence Shankland, this is not the most pressing area of concern this summer.

Rangers want to add a creative, versatile attacker who can play across the front with several names mentioned in the last few weeks.

Reports in Portugal have claimed that Rangers had a bid turned down for FC Porto star Gonçalo Borges.

The Portuguese attacker is likely Strasbourg bound but the Ibrox side reportedly had a €6m (£5m) offer rejected by Porto.

The club have also been routinely linked to Plymouth Argyle’s Morgan Whittaker and remain in the hunt for the 23-year-old attacker.

Despite Plymouth naming a high asking price for Whittaker, there are suggestions that Rangers remain confident a deal can be struck.

Whether that will be in time for Whittaker to be in the squad to face Hearts, or to play Dynamo Kiev, remains to be seen.

But it’s an area of the park Rangers desperately need reinforcements and any move for Morgan Whittaker would represent an ambitious piece of business for the club.
