Barry Ferguson makes feelings clear on Todd Cantwell despite Clement’s Ibrox olive branch

Rangers captain Barry Ferguson knows all about run-ins with managers at Ibrox.

The treble-winning former Rangers captain was never shy of a bit of controversy but his bite on the pitch always backed up his bark off it.

Infamously clashing with Paul le Guen and being stripped of the Ibrox captaincy in 2007, there’s also that famous Cameron House clash on Scotland duties in 2009.

But between the bust-ups and fist fights, Barry Ferguson’s commitment to the cause at Rangers was never in doubt as he emerged as the best player of his generation in Scotland.

The same however cannot be said of wantaway Ibrox brat Todd Cantwell who’s been stinking out the Rangers dressing room pretty much since Michael Beale left the club.

Ferguson ‘disappointed’ in Cantwell

Rangers manager Philippe Clement confirmed to the press last week that Todd Cantwell had put in a transfer request at the club.

Around 18 months on from first moving to the club from Norwich City, Cantwell’s sharp Ibrox regression has been stark and the midfielder is persona non grata amongst fans as a result.

There is nothing worse than chucking it in Rangers colours and Todd Cantwell’s attitude has not only stunk out Govan, but it’s spoiled his at times strained relationship with the support.

Legendary ex-Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson has had his say on the situation and whilst Fergie is ‘disappointed’, he’s urged Clement to get this bad egg out the door ASAP.

That’s even if Ferguson believes there’s a talented player inside the 26-year-old.

“The manager has made that clear,” Ferguson told the GO Radio Football Show (30/07).

“[Cantwell’s] obviously put a transfer request in. Personally I’m disappointed. I think there’s something in Todd Cantwell. But listen, there’s something obviously not right there.

“He’s asked to move on and you don’t keep hold of a player who wants to move on.

“If somebody puts in a transfer request or says ‘I’d like to move on’, you need to care about who wants to be at the club, not the ones that don’t want to.”

Clement keeps Rangers door open

The comments from Barry Ferguson come after Philippe Clement extended an olive branch to Todd Cantwell this week.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Rangers manager Clement was asked about the situation with Cantwell and whether or not there was a way back for the midfielder.

And despite Todd’s insistence that he wants to leave Ibrox, Big Phil has confirmed his door is always open should the ex-England U21 international change his mind.

“I kept the door all the time open all these weeks,” said Clement. “It is already a while ago that he came the first time with that.

“As long as a player is here and we believe in his qualities the door is always open.

“But, of course, we need to focus now on the guys who are totally with their minds in the club to get results in the next couple of weeks. We will see what happens.”

Todd Cantwell has made 64 appearances since joining Rangers in the January of 2023, scoring 14 goals.
