Rangers-linked Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo has completed a transfer to Belgian side Standard Liege.

The Gers were strongly linked with a summer move for the centre-back as Michael Beale looked to reinforce his Rangers squad.

Reports at the time had claimed Rangers were willing to pay up to £2.5m for Jonathan Panzo with competition from across England and Europe in his services.

As things would transpire, Panzo moved on loan to Cardiff City but after a disappointing six months in Wales has now completed a deal to take him to Belgium.

Jonathan Panzo moves to Standard Liege

Jonathan Panzo completes a loan switch to Standard Liege until the end of the season after being recalled from a loan with Cardiff.

The defender managed only five appearances for the Championship club in the first half of the campaign and will hope to improve on this on the continent.

Still only 23-years-old, Nottingham Forest harbour some big ambitions for the defender who is tasked with leaving a bigger impression in Belgium.

Standard are currently 10th in the Belgian Pro League with the addition of Jonathan Panzo aimed at helping them get up the table.

New Rangers defender not transfer priority

Jonathan Panzo might’ve been spoke about in strong terms as a Rangers target, but it’s unclear just how close, if at all, a deal was to being completed.

Rangers were linked to a number of left-sided centre-backs in the summer transfer window with the likes of Auston Trusty and Harry Souttar also mentioned.

Much of the interest appeared to be predicated on the future of Ben Davies at Rangers, who failed in a bid to agree a deal with Stoke City.

But Rangers haven’t exactly done too badly since sticking with what they’ve got, a combination of Davies, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, and John Souttar impressing as of late.

The Ibrox side boast the best defensive record in Scotland, netting only 11 league goals this season, and Jonathan Panzo would’ve done well to break into the team.

As a result, a new defender has not been a priority this window as Rangers look to bolster other areas of their squad.

Nottingham Forest meanwhile have been told where to go after they enquired about a key Rangers player.
