Morgan Whittaker has been linked to Rangers since before Philippe Clement took the reins as Ibrox manager.

For the best part of two years, Rangers have been subject to a number of transfer links surrounding the English forward, stretching back to his days with Swansea City.

Morgan Whitaker now turns out for English Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle and there’s always been a feeling that he’s destined for a higher level than the Pilgrims.

But going by the latest from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, it looks increasingly unlikely that he’ll reach the next stage at Ibrox.

Fabrizio Romano Morgan Whittaker latest

Fabrizio Romano is claiming that English Premier League hopefuls Burnley have reignited their summer interest in Morgan Whittaker.

The Italian claims that Burnley have submitted an ‘official bid’ for the winger and that Whittaker is ‘top of their list’ after a failed summer enquiry.

Rangers fans will remember Burnley links to Whittaker in the summer with the same source, Fabrizio Romano, claiming the Clarets had launched an enquiry.

This is after Rangers reportedly had a £7m summer move for Whittaker thrown out.

Rangers have been long-term suitors of Morgan Whittaker with the original links stretching back to Michael Beale’s tenure and the attacker’s time at Swansea City.

Beale admitted Rangers had a bid for Whittaker turned down back in January 2023 after the Welsh outfit had recalled the now 24-year-old from a successful Ioan stint with Plymouth.

Plymouth would then break their transfer record to pay £1m to sign Whittaker in the summer of 2023 following promotion to the English Championship.

Long-term Rangers target downs Premier League club

Despite Plymouth being rooked to the bottom of the English Championship, Morgan Whittaker scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 FA Cup victory over Premier League Brentford this weekend.

The Pilgrims number 10 rattled in a long-range left foot drive with eight minutes to play to earn Plymouth safe progression to the 4th round.

Back in September, Morgan Whittaker was asked about the links to Rangers and his future with Plymouth Argyle.

Rangers had been warned by then Plymouth manager Wayne Rooney that only a ‘crazy’ bid would tempt the Pilgrims to sell.

But with Rooney gone and Burnley back at the table, it remains unclear if Rangers are set to resurrect their long-term interest in the attacker.

Whittaker himself certainly kept the door open to a move when asked about the transfer links earlier in the season.

“I have been in this situation before so I know how to handle it and I found ways it worked for me, and that’s just focusing on what I can do,” said Whittaker, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I think the difference to when I was at Swansea is I knew I was going to play here.

“In my eyes it was a win-win because I love it here and I’m playing all the time, and if I got the chance to move it would be to the higher level I want to be getting to. I didn’t see it as a bad position to be in.”
