As Rangers close in on a deal for Ivorian midfielder Mohamed Diomande, the club’s January transfer business is not expected to end there.
The Gers added Fabio Silva before the transfer window had even burst open with several new arrivals expected before it slams shut on February 1st.
Right to Dream Academy graduate Diomande, 22, certainly fits the Rangers player trading bill as the FC Nordsjælland midfielder looks to take the next step in his career.
Reports in Denmark broke Rangers’ interest in the midfielder as recruitment guru Nils Koppen flexes his European muscle after moving to the Gers from PSV.
As Scotland is battered by Storm Isha, the transfer had been delayed but the move is expected to be completed imminently after the midfielder passes a medical.
Beyond that, there are several outstanding positions we’re yet to fill in the transfer window with the reportedly imminent arrival of the Ivory Coast youth international set to kickstart a busy week in Govan.
Striker to follow Mohamed Diomande into Rangers?
Rangers have been plagued by midfield injury issues all season with Ryan Jack, Jose Cifuentes, John Lundstram, Kieran Dowell, and Nicolas Raskin all spending time on the sidelines.
The addition of Mohamed Diomande is expected to boost the club’s options in the middle of the park, with the midfielder’s offensive characteristics also potentially pushing him forward to plug the gap left by the loan exit of Sam Lammers.
But with Rangers also looking at the absences of Abdallah Sima, Danilo, and Kemar Roofe for an extended period, the top end of the park is looking decidedly thin.
An out-and-out striker certainly looks to be top of the January wishlist, with Lawrence Shankland the name routinely mentioned in the press.
Throw in comments from Philippe Clement about a lack of wingers in the club’s squad and suddenly there could be as many as two forward arrivals before the window closes.
Left-back transfer upheaval at Ibrox?
And then there is the left-back berth which – according to Philippe Clement himself – is an area of substantial concern this January.
Ridvan Yilmaz continues to be strongly linked with a move to Galatasaray, even if the left-back is said to be very committed to the Ibrox cause.
Borna Barisic’s rollercoaster six-year stint with Rangers could also be about to come to an end when his contract expires in the summer.

At the same time, one out-of-contract option that’s been strongly linked to Rangers in Gijs Smal is being told to sign a new deal at FC Twente or move on.
It all suggests that we’re in for an interesting week or so ahead with as many as three players set to follow Mohamed Diomande into Ibrox.
