FC Twente have reinforced their recruitment team as former technical director Jan Streuer signs a new deal amid Rangers links to Gijs Smal.
The Gers have been strongly linked with a move for the 26-year-old left-back, who is out of contract come the end of the season.
With Ridvan Yilmaz strongly linked with a move to Galatasaray and Borna Barisic also out of contract, Philippe Clement has admitted the position is of sizeable concern this January.
Gijs Smal is one of the more interesting links of the window and news surrounding FC Twente’s recruitment department may pique the interest of Rangers fans.
FC Twente announce new recruitment deal
Jan Streuer is FC Twente’s former technical director but the man who replaced him in Arnold Bruggink has struck a deal to keep him around for another six months.
A former FC Twente player, the 72-year-old has been heavily involved in the business side of Dutch football for decades and is widely respected in the Netherlands.
As explained by Tubantia, there were rumours that Streuer could return to another former club in Vitesse Arnhem but now the recruitment chief will remain at the club until after the summer window.
Bruggink, who is tasked with staving off Rangers interest in Gijs Smal, claims that Jan Streuer will make a “major contribution” to the buying and selling of players after striking the deal.
Rangers-linked Gijs Smal given ultimatum
The decision will likely have an implication into the situation with Gijs Smal, with Jan Streuer one of the key players in any prospective transfer to Rangers.
The situation involving the defender is also set to hit a crescendo as the January transfer window enters its final week and the Gers look to finalise their squad.
Dutch journalist Leon ten Voorde claimed earlier in the week via Dutch podcast De Warming Up that FC Twente have handed Smal a “take it or leave it” offer.

The suggestion is that the Eredivisie side want GIjs Smal to make his mind up amid links to Rangers so they can plan for the position one way or another.
With the new Ibrox left-back reports yet to be quashed by Rangers, this situation is certainly one to watch as the Dutch outfit strengthen their recruitment set-up.
GIjs Smal is something of a creative force from left-back and topped the Eredivisie’s assist charts with ten contributions last season.
