Rangers told they missed out when they let ‘future’ Ibrox manager slip through fingers

As ever with a Rangers defeat, a lot has been said after yesterday as the post-mortems are carried out and the performance dissected.

Ally McCoist has given his forthright views on recent displays but gives the manager a bit of a pass when deciding where to hand out blame.

However, some fans are starting to lose patience with Philippe Clement and think there is an ‘inevitable’ outcome in terms of his reign in charge at Ibrox.

It is probably no surprise there are split opinions on the Belgian as it is rare to have one unifying view on a manager in football these days, especially one who had such a refreshing impact when he first came in.

Rangers should have employed Derek McInnes, says Chris Sutton

But there is one man who should be in the manager’s position according to Chris Sutton and that is yesterday’s victorious Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes.

He possibly had his tongue firmly in his cheek and was looking for a reaction, but Sutton said on Sky Sports: “Rangers should’ve given the job to Derek McInnes all those years ago, they’d have been alright.”

The former Gers midfielder had the chance to return as manager back in 2017 after doing a sterling job in charge at Aberdeen.

After the sacking of Pedro Caixinha, Graeme Murty was in interim charge and the club was after a bit of security. McInnes was identified as the person to bring that and an official approach was made to Pittodrie chiefs.

It was probably widely expected he would be keen on a bigger job and a return to his old club, but he stunned by turning the offer down.

Explaining himself at the time, he told Aberdeen TV: “I had something to consider… but I feel that I wasn’t prepared to walk away just yet. I’m really happy here as everybody knows and I wasn’t prepared to tarnish relationships I’ve built over the last wee while.

“Since the official approach was made on Tuesday, we quickly got it put to bed yesterday [Thursday]. We want to get back to normal practice and we’ve tried to be as normal and professional as possible throughout it [the speculation].”

Brendan Rodgers tipped McInnes as future Rangers manager

Funnily enough, Brendan Rodgers was tipping McInnes for Rangers just last year despite the fact he previously turned the job down.

The Celtic boss rates the 53-year-old as an “outstanding” manager and sees no reason why McInnes couldn’t go back in for the Ibrox hotseat.

He said (Daily Record): “I like Derek a lot. He’s a good football man who is honest and wants to develop players. There’s no doubt that he’s good enough to manage a top club again. He’s good with players and he knows what he wants.

“He was very close to getting the Rangers job a few years ago and why couldn’t he manage Rangers? He’s a former player there, a very good player, who was part of a successful era for the club. So there’s no doubt that could be one for him in the future. Because he’s an outstanding manager.

“Sometimes you’re under-valued when you’re a British coach, especially if you’re home-grown. But if you look at somebody’s body of work over time, you can see what they are.”
