Michael Beale suggests Rangers can still go to well after £15m summer

Rangers boss Michael Beale has claimed that the Ibrox side’s busy summer of transfer business will see the club break even despite the bones of £15m investment.

The Gers have seen a major overhaul of the first-team squad with the changes rung in a last ditch attempt to protect the club’s historic dominance over Scottish football.

Speaking ahead of the club’s Champions League clash with Servette, Michael Beale explained that whilst there has been substantial investment into the side, it matches the money which has been brought in.

“Financially this summer, the money going out and the money coming in will even itself out,” said Michael Beale.

“So it’s not like, we haven’t gone to the well in terms of asking for loads of finance to rebuild the squad.

“We’ve been very clever in our selection, the way that we’ve done it in terms of the players that have left.”

In terms of transfer fees, Rangers have reportedly spent around £15m in bulking out the squad with nine new players ahead of the new campaign.

Brazilian striker Danilo is the club’s biggest piece of business, joining on a deal which could eventually cost Rangers a reported £6m.

Cyriel Dessers is another forward who has joined the Ibrox side for big money, signing on a reported £4.5m deal from Cremonese.

Atalanta forward Sam Lammers has also joined the club, signing on a deal reportedly worth around £3m whilst reports suggest Jose Cifuentes has joined from LAFC for around £1m.

The bulk of the other signings – Kieran Dowell (Norwich), Jack Butland (Crystal Palace), Dujon Sterling (Chelsea) and Leon Balogun (QPR) – have all joined on free contracts whilst Abdallah Sima (Brighton) has joined on loan.

Rangers transfer outgoings to level out with incomings

That brings the club’s summer investment in terms of transfer fees to around £15m but Michael Beale is confident the incomings will even this spend out.

That’s even if the Rangers manager has previously reputed the widespread reporting around incoming transfer fees this summer.

Substantial wages have been freed up for the free contracts by the exits of several key first teamers at the end of their Ibrox deals.

Over 1000 appearances walked out at the end of their contracts in the shape of Allan McGregor, Filip Helander, Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, all five of whom were on sizeable salaries.

Since the window opened, these have been joined by Antonio Colak (£2.5m to Parma) and Fashion Sakala (£4m to Al-Fayha) whilst there are substantial £5.5m transfer sounds around Glen Kamara.

With Leeds United reportedly topping a six-team Glen Kamara list, should a deal for the Finnish international go through as reported it will bring the summer incomings up to around £12m.

Add a level of uncertainty around £500k-rated Scott Wright and £4m centre-back Ben Davies and suddenly transfer Rangers fees could top the reported £15m investment into the squad.

Is there still “money to spend” this summer?

Praising the club’s smart business, the comments also take on deeper meaning when paired against claims from Michael Beale that he would be afforded a strong budget “for a Rangers manager” with “money to spend” earlier in the year.

This would suggest that Rangers could yet go to the well this summer as the relentless transfer business settles down and Michael Beale’s new-look team comes in for heavy scrutiny.

There are still areas of the squad which many believe demand work with left-centre back and a creative winger-type high on the support’s wishlist.

Ahead of the eventual 2-1 win over Servette, Michael Beale was eager for the club’s situation to settle so we don’t suspect there will be much business over the next few weeks.

But as the window rolls to a close, going by the Rangers boss’ previous comments there is a suggestion that should the right players become available for the right price, there is money to spend.
