Patrick Stewart had no choice but to dispose Philippe Clement of his duties with Rangers now looking for yet another new manager.

What appears to be clear is that the CEO is only on the hunt for an interim boss with the appointment of a sporting director a bigger priority in terms of the long-term picture.

Steven Gerrard has been linked but it is Barry Ferguson who is leading the way after already having a chance to impress the Rangers kingmaker.

Barry Ferguson the front runner in Rangers manager race

Gerrard has financial restrictions blocking his ability to make a swift return with Issame Charai taking training ahead of the trip to Rugby Park on Wednesday.

The recently appointed assistant manager will also take charge against Kilmarnock.

Ferguson is said to want Neil McCann and Billy Dodds on board to assist him as the Hall of Fame captain gets set to land his dream job.

Stewart and Ferguson are already well acquainted after the pair spent time together at Old Trafford for Rangers’ Europa League clash with Man Utd.

Ferguson has never held an official role since leaving the club, but it looked like he was more than just a guest as he helped pay tribute to Denis Law, suited and booted in official club clothing.

Has Ferguson role at Rangers been in the pipeline?

Nils Koppen took the first step in returning a Rangers core to the club with the appointment of Kevin Thomson to work with the Under-18s.

On his trip to Manchester, who knows what was discussed, however, it’s more than a coincidence that the technical director spoke about the club’s DNA and then a Rangers great returns to the fold:

“One of the things where I’m looking at is maybe adding in some ex-professional Rangers players to increase that level of DNA to that level of detail, players that are in this building be a part of it that know what’s about that’s something what’s going to be key in the years to come,” said Koppen about adding staff behind the scenes.

Rangers DNA doesn’t get much stronger than Barry Ferguson, as the current squad might well be about to find out.
