Rangers have been unable to meet the ‘financial demands’ of a shock managerial swoop for Steven Gerrard.
The Rangers board had reportedly prioritised an extraordinary return for Steven Gerrard following the sacking of Philippe Clement at Ibrox.
But less than 24 hours after making the announcement, a proposed deal for Steven Gerrard has collapsed with the Ibrox side turning their attentions to Barry Ferguson.
Rangers faced Steven Gerrard manager ‘hurdle’
Reuters journalist Luca Chianti had claimed that Rangers were ‘in talks’ with Steven Gerrard over a potential return to Ibrox.
The former Rangers manager left the club for Aston Villa in controversial circumstances in November 2021 and had been earmarked for a headline-grabbing return.
The reporter also claimed that Rangers were in talks with ex-Everton manager Sean Dyche over a potential move to Ibrox.
The news then took a fresh twist this morning when Chianti reported that Rangers were set to convene an emergency early morning meeting over the manager’s role.
It was claimed then that Rangers still faced a hurdle to get the ‘required financial package’ it would take to re-sign Gerrard ‘over the line’.
It was also claimed that the decision over the next manager, or at least the interim choice between now and the end of the season, rests solely with the current regime.
This comes amid widespread reporting that Rangers are in the midst of takeover discussions with a US-led consortium backed by the San Francisco 49ers.
Rangers ‘unable to meet’ Steven Gerrard demands
Luca Chianti has now put the final nail in the Steven Gerrard coffin at Rangers by claiming the Scouser’s ‘demands (are) unable to be met at this time’.
That suggests that Steven Gerrard will not be returning to Rangers with the club now focusing their attentions on alternative options.
With reports suggesting Barry Ferguson was to be offered the job at Rangers, this has now been backed up Chianti.
The journalist claims Rangers are ‘leaning’ towards a temporary fix of getting the former Ibrox captain in until the end of the season.
As things stand however, Chianti believes the Rangers board are ‘split’ on this alternative with Rangers fans eagerly awaiting an update on the situation
Rangers told supporters to expect an update in ‘due course’ after releasing a statement officially confirming Clement’s exit from the club.
