The 2 ex-Rangers stars to join Barry Ferguson’s backroom staff as Ally McCoist delivers flat reaction

Barry Ferguson is set to become the Rangers interim manager until the end of the season, it is believed.

After Philippe Clement’s sacking last night, it has been reported Fergie till take over at Gers on a temporary basis to try and steady the ship before a permanent successor comes in.

That would then give Ibrox chiefs the chance to take their time on getting their pick for who to come in during the summer spot on, with talks underway with Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche.

Ally McCoist has already had his say on the situation, insisting he would have liked Frank Lampard while naming Gerrard, Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes as candidates.

He has now delivered a somewhat underwhelmed reaction to news about Ferguson.

Ferguson wants Neil McCann and Billy Dodds at Rangers

On talkSPORT this morning, Jim White has reported that the former Rangers captain is due to meet Patrick Stewart this morning for discussions ahead of taking the interim role.

And he reportedly wants Neil McCann and Billy Dodds to go make up his coaching staff until the end of the season.

White said: “It is my understanding that Barry Ferguson will meet with the chief executive of Rangers, Patrick Stewart, this morning regarding the interim manager’s position until the end of the season.

“I also understand that Barry would wish to bring Neil McCann and Billy Dodds with him.”

Asked by Jeff Stelling for a quick reaction, Coisty delayed slightly before saying: “Erm…I’m a little bit surprised but we will see what happens.”

What Ferguson previously said about Rangers role chance

Fergie almost had the chance to go in at Rangers as a coach under Pedro Caixinha after the Portuguese boss got the job.

And he reflected on his chats with the Ibrox flop that when he appeared on an Open Goal podcast.

“Yes, I did (meet Caixinha),” said ex-Gers captain Ferguson.

“Oh my God.

“I am glad (I didn’t get the job), mate. The guy never got Rangers – I don’t care what anybody said.

“He was asking about the Scottish game.

“So, I started talking about Pittodrie, Tynecastle, Easter Road, Fir Park, horrible places to go and play.

“You’ve got to change sometimes, sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and win the battle.

“But he is looking at me and saying no I play this way and this way only.

“I said it’s not going to operate, it’s not going to work at Rangers.

“He just looked at me and I thought ‘I have nae chance of this job!’

“I’m glad I never got it because see if I did work with him, I would probably have got sacked after three or four weeks.

“Because the guy never got what Rangers is all about.”
