The three top reported Rangers January transfer targets

As Rangers head into the January transfer window attention will quickly turn to the targets new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will add to his side.

Whilst the Gers will be desperate to keep a hold of their top talent, all the sounds at Rangers suggest that they will only enter the market for the right player or if someone moves on.

And with GVB one of the most respected names on the continent having captained the Netherlands to a World Cup Final and turned out for the Gers, Arsenal and Barcelona, he holds major sway to get deals done.

Here are three names being extensively linked with the Gers ahead of the January window:

John Souttar

It might sound unconventional given the pitch we’ve just given van Bronckhorst, but links to Hearts defender John Souttar just do not go away.

Whilst European talent always captures the imaginations of supporters, Rangers as a club should endeavour to sign up the best Scottish players to assist their own Euro ambitions.

But not only does Souttar improve the homegrown quota, but the 25-year-old has been Hearts’ best player this season, he’s a Scotland international and his contract expires in the summer.

This might depend on the future of Connor Goldson, but between Souttar and Dutch defender Danilho Doeki, plenty believe a centre-back could bolster the squad this January.

Xavi Simons

Ok, so some reports might be suggesting that Rangers aren’t likely to move for the PSG wonderkid Xavi Simons but the young Dutch youth international has been mooted as one of several targets.

A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, this talented teenage playmaker is a player in demand with Rangers linked to the midfielder alongside former club Barca.

Reports in France from RMC Sport are claiming that Xavi Simons wants out of PSG with his contract expiring come the summer and is eyeing more first-team opportunities.

You want glamour with van Bronckhorst? Signing one of Europe’s most revered young players will probably help bring that.

But whatever the case, the fact Rangers have been linked puts Gio’s continental pull into focus and we suspect more young Dutch links may be on the horizon.

Andreas Skov Olsen

Rangers have solid history with Danish forwards – just ask Brian Laudrup or Peter Lovenkrands – and 21-year-old attacker Andreas Skov Olsen has been linked to Ibrox throughout his career.

Prior to making a move to Bologna, the ex-FC Nordsjælland talent was reportedly on Rangers shortlists and he’s been mentioned several times over the years.

Now out of favour at Bologna, reports have suggested Rangers are one of a number of clubs monitoring the player who is expected to leave Italy.

Another tremendously talented young player who would be given a stage to progress at Rangers, right-wing is an area apparently interesting the Gers with Anderlecht’s Francis Amuzu also linked.
