Reports: £26m Premier League deal won’t impact Rangers interest

Aston Villa’s megabucks move for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos won’t impact their interest in Rangers star Calvin Bassey, claim a series of a reports.

Steven Gerrard has lined up a summer of impressive investment so far and having already brought in Phillipe Coutinho and in-demand Marseille defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara to the club.

Next up was Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos who moves to Birmingham on a deal reportedly worth £26m.

News of this signing had plenty questioning if the move would impact reported Villa interest in Calvin Bassey, given the Ibrox defender’s ability to play at centre-back.

Aston Villa Diego Carlos move won’t impact interest in Rangers’ Calvin Bassey

Reports earlier in the week claimed that Aston Villa were “closing in” on a move for the 22-year-old Nigerian international.

But according to Sky Sports, the Aston Villa move for Diego Carlos has not impacted reported interest in Calvin Bassey with Steven Gerrard one of several Premier League bosses interested in the Ibrox star.

The report also claims that several Bundesliga clubs are also tracking the Rangers star, who was Man of the Match in the recent Europa League Final against Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Gers expecting the bidding to start at £25m.

The Rangers star is said to be “open” to a move but Bassey is settled at Ibrox is also open to staying at Glasgow.

This all comes amid the suggestion of a busy transfer window at Rangers this summer with several players out of contract or entering the final year of their deals.

If Rangers lose both Calvin Bassey and Connor Goldson in the same window then the club will surely need reinvest in the squad’s defence.

Should the Ibrox club look no further than a painfully familiar face who was not so long ago reportedly on a Man United shortlist?
