Aston Villa have reached an agreement so sign £26m-rated Sevilla defender Diego Carlos amid links to Rangers star Calvin Bassey.

Steven Gerrard has already added Phillipe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara to his squad as the Villa Park side gear up for a summer of investment.

Rangers fans have been nervously awaiting news regarding the suggestion some of this could land at Ibrox’s door with The Times confusing us earlier in the week with talk of an imminent deal.

Traditionally a left-back, Bassey’s versatility will certainly be an attractive prospect with the Nigerian international also excelling at centre-back this season.

But despite those high-profile links, Sky Sports are now claiming Aston Villa have reached an “agreement” regarding Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos for a fee of £26m.

They claim that Diego Carlos will now travel to England to agree personal terms and the news comes after Newcastle United were knocked back in January for the 29-year-old.

This is after Sevilla had demanded £38m for the player only four months ago.

It’s not clear what this will do to any prospective Villa interest in Calvin Bassey but ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is wasting no time in improving his squad.

The Liverpool legend has huge sway at Villa and this project looks to be a very exciting one heading into next season as he looks to add Diego Carlos to the club’s ranks.

“The tone was set in the previous window. We got superb backing from the owners, Christian [Purslow] and Johan [Lange] to help get those signings done,” said Gerrard [Times].

“Again, straight away we’ve moved swiftly, we’ve moved quietly to try and get another big player in the door. To do that on day one of the off-season is a massive step. Now it’s time to push and move forward for the next piece of the jigsaw.”

Meanwhile, Rangers are being linked with a move for a 26-goal striker currently plying his trade south of the border.
