There is some confusion surrounding a suggestion emerging today that Rangers star Calvin Bassey is imminently set to move for Aston Villa.
The Ibrox left-back-turned-centre-back has had a monumental season in Glasgow and there have been several Premier League suitors linked to the Nigerian international as a result.

Only 22, English trained and already with a MOTM showing in a European Final under his belt, the future is bright for Calvin and Rangers fans will be hoping for a new deal and perhaps another season out the player.
But this could be rocked by a big money transfer move with all the talk in Scotland surrounding Calvin Bassey insistent the ex-Leicester City kid is worth north of £20m to Rangers.
Amongst the previously named Premier League suitors is Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard, who took Bassey to Ibrox in 2020.
But even the Anfield legend couldn’t have foreseen such a massive rise in such a short period of time as Calvin Bassey goes from Rangers squad player to – probably – the club’s biggest asset.
Are Aston Villa really “closing in” on a deal for Rangers’ Calvin Bassey?
Gerrard and co have also sat up and taken notice with the Times – considered amongst the most reputable sources on these shores – claiming that Aston Villa are lining up a move for Calvin Bassey.
However, there has been some confusion surrounding the report headline and a tweet from the newspaper’s editor Magnus Llewellin.
Llewellin shared the Times report on his official Twitter account reiterating that Aston Villa are “closing in” on a deal for Calvin Bassey.
This language suggests they are somewhat close to completing a deal for the Rangers star.
However the content of the report is much less forward – despite the headline suggesting otherwise – and merely intimates that Villa are set to step up their interest.
The Times report claims that Aston Villa were impressed with Bassey’s performance in the Scottish Cup Final and that they’re merely going to “step up” their pursuit.
There are also accompanying quotes from Gerrard, where he says “now it’s time to push and move forward for the next piece of the jigsaw” at Villa Park.
It’s led to some confusion; are Aston Villa at the early stages of any prospective interest in the Rangers star or is he imminently set to move to the Premier League?

One thing does appear to be clear; Aston Villa have cash to burn and they may well be in a position to fund a move for Rangers star Calvin Bassey.
But something tells us there’s a while to run on this one just yet.
Villa have already made two major moves in the transfer market as a factor the Rangers support are very familiar with comes to the fore.
