Rangers have suffered their first blow of the summer transfer window, and the 2025-26 season is not over yet.

The Light Blues have nothing to play for now, as they are confirmed to finish third in the Scottish Premiership after losing 3-1 against Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

Having suffered three defeats on the bounce, Danny Rohl will be determined to return to winning ways when Rangers host Hibernian at Ibrox on Wednesday.

However, the Gers think tank will already have an eye on the summer transfer window, when the squad is expected to undergo another overhaul.

Toronto FC are sending Jose Cifuentes back to Ibrox

The summer transfer window does not open until mid-June, but Rangers have already suffered a setback in their business.

It has emerged that Toronto FC have decided against taking up the option to sign Jose Cifuentes on a permanent deal from the Glaswegian outfit.

The Canadian outfit acquired the Ecuador international on a season-long loan last summer and had inserted a £1.5million buy option in the agreement at the time, as per reputable MLS journalist Manuel Veth.

However, Cifuentes will return to Rangers when his loan deal with Toronto expires next month, according to the Daily Record.

That means Rohl’s side are set to miss out on a £1.5m cash windfall this summer.

Rangers have Cifuentes transfer decision to make

It would not be wrong to claim that the Ibrox outfit need to offload a few players to fund their summer overhaul.

Therefore, it is evident that they could have benefited from pocketing £1.5m for the sale of Cifuentes, whom Michael Beale signed for £1.2m in 2023.

The 27-year-old has struggled to settle into life in Scotland, thus heading out on loan thrice since signing for Rangers.

The MLS Players Association recently released their 2026 salary guide, revealing that Cifuentes is pocketing an annual guaranteed compensation of $1.57m (£1.16m).

That is a healthy sum by the competition’s wage standards, and it appears Toronto have no desire to continue splurging such a sum on him.

It would not be a surprise if Rangers looked to cut their losses on the player and offload him this summer.
