Lewis Ferguson has discussed a transfer to Rangers with his agent, Bill McMurdo, amid recent struggles at Bologna.

The midfielder was on the Light Blues’ books as a boy, but left without making a single first-team appearance.

Ferguson has since forged a reputable career, establishing himself as the captain of Bologna after four successful years at Aberdeen.

However, the 26-year-old has seen his playing time dwindle since the Serie A club introduced a rotational system, thus leading to talk of a return to Rangers this summer.

Bill McMurdo confirms Lewis Ferguson will play for Rangers

McMurdo initially poured cold water on a potential move to Ibrox for Ferguson this summer, suggesting the Scot would only consider offers from the top five European leagues.

However, the renowned football agent appeared warmer to the idea during his appearance on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live on Tuesday.

He confirmed that Ferguson will play for Rangers at some point in his career, although that is unlikely to be next season.

Ferguson’s agent said, “I will tell you this, Lewis will play for Rangers before his career finishes. Absolutely no doubt about that. He’s maintained from day one that he’ll, sometime in his career, come and play for Rangers. No doubt. 100 per cent.”

McMurdo revealed that the Bologna skipper has already told him he wants to join the Gers, admitting he would be keen to facilitate such a transfer this summer.

He added, “We have had discussions in the past. Two things he’s said to me: he wants to play in the English Premier League at some time, and he wants to play for Rangers at some time.

“Now, if Rangers could make it happen and we could do a deal with Bologna, I’d love that, but I don’t know if it could happen because of the money situation.”

It remains to be seen if the Glasgow giants can afford Ferguson, who attracted bids worth as high as £22million last year.

However, McMurdo reckons the player’s value has dropped to as little as £8.6m after being restricted to just 15 Serie A starts this term.

He said, “I think the money could be too big, but I could be wrong. Last year, they couldn’t afford him because when we had Juventus and Napoli with offers on the table, they were talking about paying somewhere in the region of €20-€25million (£17-22m).

“We have a situation whereby I’ve said to Bologna this year, because of this rotational system that they have, they’ve dropped his value.

“They have to understand that because of that, his value must have decreased to about €10-€15m (£8.6-£13m).”

Why Ferguson is perfect to replace James Tavernier as the captain

If McMurdo is right that Ferguson’s value has decreased to £8.6m, he might just be affordable for Rangers.

In that case, Andrew Cavenagh and Co. must push the boat out to bring the Hamilton-born ace back to Ibrox.

With James Tavernier departing, the Light Blues need a new captain, and Ferguson would be the perfect choice, considering his experience and connection to the club.

Furthermore, he would be a great addition in midfield, especially if Nico Raskin departs for a decent fee after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

All in all, Rangers must be at the front of the queue if Ferguson is available for a cut-price fee this summer.
