There isn’t a single position in the Rangers starting XI that is secure or that could be different by the time next season kicks off.
After Nicolas Raskin’s man of the match display for Belgium and Hamza Igamane already being linked with clubs, even the club’s two best players aren’t safe.
Craig Moore reckons every player is up for sale and few would argue against the former Gers skipper.
One position that previous looked to be secure but is now as uncertain as the rest is goalkeeper.
Jack Butland’s form has nosedived which leaves Liam Kelly living a dream; however, could a move for a former target solve the problem?
Rangers fans not happy about Angus Gunn signing suggestion
This is what journalist Derek Clark reckons with the news that Angus Gunn is set to leave Norwich City at the end of his contract in the summer:
“Angus Gunn leaving Norwich in the summer. Rangers should be all over that,” claimed The Rangers Review’s Clark.
It was a recommendation that hasn’t gone down well with Rangers fans.
“I would prefer we kept Butland, and cut his hands off,” said one far from impressed Rangers fan, “Behave yersel,” said another, immediately dismissing the suggestion.
“Absolutely not. Bang average goalkeeper, will want high wages and probably not even homegrown for the European squad,” This fan is right, despite his status as a Scottish international, Gunn isn’t classed as a homegrown player for UEFA quotas.
More objective, this fan has questioned Gunn’s ability to handle the big occasion, “He was absolutely honking in the Euros for Scotland. Rangers need to target a goalkeeper who can handle pressure moments. Doesn’t tick the boxes.” It is hard to argue otherwise.
And, if I had a pound for everytime a fan wrote, “He’s worse than Butland.”
Would Gunn be a good signing on a Bosman?
The fans have spoken, and they are right.
Gunn isn’t any better than either Butland or Kelly, even if he is available on a free transfer.
Maybe, maybe, if Butland was still in the form from his first eight months at Rangers then Gunn, who was valued at £10m, would be a decent option to push him in training and as a backup.
Things might have been (slightly) different if Gunn was eligible for the homegrown UEFA quota but this season has shown how important it is to get a dominant No.1 who isn’t going to give away cheap goals.
And that isn’t Gunn.
