Rangers will make another attempt in the summer to build the sort of team that is capable of competing for a season, not just a few one-off games.
The current Rangers squad is set to be ripped up again with five players out of contract and several others who clearly aren’t good enough to be relied upon.
Despite the issues, Rangers don’t need a striker, it doesn’t help when there are questionable selection calls, however, there are three available who can all get numbers.
Only a year ago, there was a debate about whether or not a £4m valuation for Lawrence Shankland was too high.
Now, available for free but having only scored five goals, Rangers fans aren’t so quick to back the move.

Rangers fans were split down the middle when the potential deal for a known Bluenose was mooted by Stevie Clifford of the Four Lads Had a Dream podcast:
“Guy who knows where the net is on a free, as back up? Knows the Scottish game, the league and loves the club? Got to be considered.
“I said it start of the season we were far too light on strikers
“(Hamza) Igamane wasn’t ready, Danillo wasn’t fit and you can’t rely on (Cyriel) Dessers consistently. Even now with all three fit you feel we’d benefit from one more,” suggested one fan.
“The season we won 55 was the only season we had strength in depth. Not all first team regulars, but good enough to put on the park when injuries and suspensions started hitting us.
“Now he’s a free transfer, I would be interested but is he really going to give up first team football regularly and the chance to be called up by Scotland to play 3rd/4th fiddle at us,” questioned another.
This fan also used the title winning squad as a solid argument for signing the Hearts skipper, “In 20/21 we had (Alfredo) Morelos, (Jermain) Defoe, (Kemar) Roofe and (Cedric) Itten. They all scored some goals. We need to have more players contribute. Shankland’s not my current pick but I could understand it as a back up.”
“Wouldn’t touch him, we need a another reshuffle , young quality players required,” disagreed this fan, however, another was fully on board, even if his numbers have dropped, “As one of three or four strikers, Shankland – despite his poor season – ticks a lot of boxes.”

Nils Koppen said he was going to sign more Scots and Shankland is still one of the best in Rangers’ price range, especially on a Bosman.
The Hearts skipper’s numbers aren’t great for this season given his paltry goal return of five (with nine assists), but he has been deployed in a deeper role for almost the whole season.
As a back-up, similar to Liam Kelly, it wouldn’t do any harm, but if Rangers are serious about catching Celtic, they need to sign players who would get game time for them.
