A Rangers insider has shared details of a release clause in Lawrence Shankland’s contract at Hearts.

Alex McLeish recently revealed that the Light Blues opted not to sign the Scotland international despite his advice, while Russell Martin turned down the chance to snap him up on a free transfer.

However, after seeing the 30-year-old score 20 goals in 34 appearances for Hearts across all competitions last season, Rangers have finally decided to swoop in for him.

Would Rangers have won the league if they signed Lawrence Shankland instead of Youssef Chermiti?

David Edgar shares Lawrence Shankland ‘release clause’

It emerged on Saturday that Rangers want to wrap up Shankland’s signing within 48 hours in a bid to acquire his services before he flies to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The centre-forward’s exit would be a huge blow for Hearts, especially considering they fell short of winning the Premiership this season after coming so close.

However, their fans hope that the club can at least pocket a handsome fee for Shankland’s sale, with STV Radio host Ewen Cameron demanding over £8million.

David Edgar of the Heart and Hand podcast, though, was quick to dismiss that sum.

The Ibrox insider claimed that the Gers are expected to trigger the release clause in Shankland’s contract, and suggested that the fee is less than Cameron’s desired amount.

In response to Cameron, Edgar wrote on X: “You’ll get what is in his release clause and like it.”

There are murmurs in some quarters that a clause in Shankland’s deal will allow him to move to Ibrox for free.

How Shankland would fit at Rangers

Shankland would represent exactly the kind of signing the Light Blues have been crying out for – a proven goalscorer who knows how to win games in Scotland.

The Hearts captain has been one of the most consistent strikers in the Premiership, firing his side to within touching distance of the title this year.

He brings goals, leadership, and crucially, the winning mentality that Kris Boyd identified as Rangers’ biggest missing ingredient under Danny Rohl.

At 30, Shankland is still at his peak, and paired alongside Youssef Chermiti, who has already shown his own clinical edge this season, the Scot could form one of the most feared striking partnerships Scottish football has seen in years.
