Russell Martin decision has cost Rangers £40m as Andrew Cavenagh faces major problem to solve

Russell Martin’s mistakes as Rangers manager seem to be endless, with another one coming to light recently.

Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Hearts on Monday meant that Danny Rohl will not guide the team to the Scottish Premiership title this season.

This means that the Light Blues are seven points behind the leaders on the SPFL table, and face a daunting Old Firm derby over the weekend.

Will Rangers sack Danny Rohl if they fail to win the league?

If he goes, who would be a good replacement for him?

Ewen Cameron explains how Russell Martin blocked Lawrence Shankland transfer

STV Football host Ewen Cameron has revealed that Lawrence Shankland would have been a Rangers player had it not been for Martin.

Shankland, whose goal knocked the Gers out of the title race, was willing to move to Ibrox in the summer.

However, the newly-appointed Martin believed that he was not the answer, and instead sanctioned moves for Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski.

Shankland has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, while Chermiti and Miovski have scored 12 and 13, respectively.

Andrew Cavenagh knows that he has a big problem ahead of the summer as he needs to sanction the funds to build a squad stronger than not just one, but two teams.

Discussing the failed Shankland transfer, Cameron wrote on X: “The shadow of Russell Martin still hovers over Rangers like a dark cloud because he decided, last summer, to not sign Lawrence Shankland.

“That decision has, ultimately, cost Rangers £40million & given Hearts the chance to win the title

“For that reason, thank you Russell.”

Would Rangers have won the league if they signed Lawrence Shankland instead of Youssef Chermiti?

What change should Rangers make against Celtic?

Rohl knows that there is little to play for in terms of his side winning the title, but he could redeem himself with the fans if he manages to beat Celtic.

Not only will it be an Old Firm derby victory at Parkhead, but would ensure that the Hoops find it even harder to win the title.

All neutrals are cheering for Hearts and even the Ibrox faithful now want Derek McInnes’ side to win the trophy rather than their arch rivals.

Thus, the Celtic game becomes a must-win for Rohl, and he will surely make some changes for that one.

Tuur Rommens came off the bench and shone, and he is likely to start in place of James Tavernier, with Dujon Sterling moving to right-back.

Connor Barron could also start in place of Mohammed Diomande, while Rohl may want to give Bojan Miovski a start as well.
