Rangers will breathe a sigh of relief after Wayne Rooney was sacked from Birmingham City amid links to goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Championship side have decided to part company with the Manchester United legend after a disastrous few months in charge at St Andrews.

Taking over from Rangers-linked John Eustace – who was sacked at the club to make way for the former DC United boss – Wayne Rooney won only two of 15 games in charge of Birmingham.

England’s greatest ever goalscorer (53), Rooney leaves after a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United left the Blues 20th in the English Championship and with his reputation as a manager in tatters.

Whilst Rangers fans might not be too fazed by the sacking of Wayne Rooney at Birmingham, the situation will have a knock on effect amid St Andrews links to Jack Butland.

Back in October when Rooney took charge at Birmingham City, reports emerged in the Sun claiming that the Three Lions legend wanted to take ex-England teammate Butland to St Andrews.

Reports at the time even suggested that Rangers would consider selling the 30-year-old Ibrox stopper for a fee in the region of £5m.

The entire situation had manager Philippe Clement talking about Jack Butland’s Rangers future and it’s clear the links to Birmingham City were always a tad ambitious.

But now Wayne Rooney has left the club, it’s essentially ended the links with the England legend’s friendship with the Rangers goalkeeper at the crux of the reports.

Rangers fans will be glad to hear that the conditions of Jack Butland’s only reported suitors of the transfer window have officially changed.

The Ibrox club’s supporters have grown especially fond of the talented stopper, who joined the club on a Bosman transfer following the expiration of his contract at Crystal Palace in the summer.

An ever-present in the Rangers side this season, the best compliment that can be paid Jack Butland is that he’s filled the massive gloves of Allan McGregor almost seamlessly.

A majorly talented goalkeeper who is well on his way to legendary status at Ibrox, we’re sure the Gers won’t be able to hold off interest from down south forever.

But in the meantime, as if he ever was, Jack Butland will now not be moving to Birmingham City after they sacked Wayne Rooney as manager.

The Blues tumbled 14 places from 6th in the English Championship table under the management of Rooney who has also had stints in charge of Derby County and in the MLS.
