Rangers flop set to join Besiktas as Vaclav Cerny transfer back on cards again

Andreas Skov Olsen is set to join Besiktas following his return to Wolfsburg, and his arrival at the Turkish club could inadvertently hand Rangers a major transfer boost in their pursuit of Vaclav Cerny.

Skov Olsen endured a disappointing loan spell at Ibrox during the 2025-26 season, failing to justify the Gers’ faith in him and leaving the club with no desire to trigger the £8.6million buyout clause in his contract.

The 26-year-old returned to Wolfsburg amid a mass exodus at the German club following their relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga, and the Daily Record, via its print edition on Monday, reports that Besiktas are set to be his next destination.

The move carries a striking sense of familiarity for Rangers supporters, and a potentially significant knock-on effect for the club’s summer transfer plans.

Skov Olsen’s Besiktas move could unlock Cerny return to Ibrox

The parallels with Cerny are impossible to ignore. The Czech winger took an almost identical route last year – impressing on loan at Rangers, returning to Wolfsburg, before eventually joining Besiktas on a permanent basis.

Now Skov Olsen appears set to follow that same path – Wolfsburg, Rangers loan, back to Wolfsburg, then Besiktas – completing a transfer circle that could have significant implications for Rangers’ own recruitment this summer.

The crucial detail is the profile overlap, as both Cerny and Skov Olsen are left-footed wide players with broadly similar attributes.

Besiktas, operating under new head coach Vincenzo Italiano, are unlikely to want both players competing for the same position in their squad.

Rangers have been plotting a move to bring Cerny back to Ibrox, with earlier reports suggesting Italiano had given his approval for the Czech international to leave.

That stance has since shifted, with the Italian tactician reportedly changing his mind and wanting to keep Cerny at all costs.

However, Skov Olsen’s imminent arrival at Besiktas could force a rethink, making Cerny the natural casualty of a squad reshuffle that suddenly has one too many left-footed wide players on the books.

What it means for Rangers

Derek McInnes would love to have someone of Cerny’s ability in his ranks, while Besiktas may soon not need him.

Sometimes transfers work themselves out, and this one could be moving in the Ibrox club’s favour without them having to do a thing.

It just remains to be seen if Andrew Cavenagh can go and strike a favourable deal to bring the 28-year-old back to Govan.
