Rangers have received a huge blow to their hopes of signing Vaclav Cerny from Besiktas this summer.

Cerny became a Rangers fan favourite when he spent the 2024-25 season on loan with the Light Blues, bagging 18 goals and nine assists in 52 appearances.

The Gers had the chance to make the Czech international’s move permanent for a reasonable fee, but ultimately passed up on it, leading the attacker to join Besiktas for £6million.

Kevin Thelwell was responsible for recruitment at Rangers at the time, and since he is no longer at the club, there appears to be a desire to rekindle the interest.

Besiktas boss wants Cerny to stay

Keith Jackson recently claimed that Rangers may already be working on a deal to bring the 28-year-old back to Govan.

Meanwhile, encouraging reports in Turkiye claimed that new Besiktas head coach Vincenzo Italiano had already approved Cerny’s sale.

However, in a sudden twist of events, it has emerged that Italiano does not want to offload the left-footer.

According to the Istanbul newspaper Milliyet, Cerny is in the list of foreign players the Besiktas boss wants to stay ‘at all costs’.

The Super Lig giants are in the process of restructuring their squad to align with the new 10+4 rule introduced in the league.

According to the new rule, clubs can have 14 foreign players in their squad for the 2026-27 season, but at least four of them should be born in or after 2004.

This will see Besiktas offload a few of their senior foreign players, but Cerny will not be one of them.

Rangers suffer major heartbreak

Although there have not been any credible reports from the likes of Chris Jack, a large section of the Rangers fanbase had gotten their hopes up.

However, it appears the former Wolfsburg man will not be returning to Ibrox after all, handing a major blow to the supporters who were keen to see him back.

This also comes as a huge heartbreak to Rangers, who are looking to add a new winger to their squad after Mikey Moore returned to Tottenham following his loan.
