A potential return to Rangers for Vaclav Cerny this summer is gathering pace behind the scenes.

Cerny became a fan favourite during his loan stint with the Light Blues during the 2024-25 season, when he bagged 18 goals and nine assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

The Rangers faithful were keen to see the club make the Czech international’s loan move from Wolfsburg permanent, but it did not materialise, leading the player to join Besiktas instead.

Keith Jackson has now dropped major revelations on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live, revealing the true nature of those conversations last year, as a reunion is now back on the cards.

Jackson drops Cerny bombshell as Rangers transfer talks revealed

Speaking on Hotline Live, Jackson revealed that Rangers had a genuine opportunity to sign Cerny last summer, and that the fee required to make a deal happen was far more manageable than what had been publicly suggested at the time.

The journalist disclosed that Cerny had spoken directly to interim manager Barry Ferguson, and that a clear understanding had been reached around the compensation required, dismissing the inflated figures that had been circulating in public as wide of the mark.

Jackson then went further, subtly revealing that Rangers are actively exploring a deal with Besiktas to sign the 28-year-old this summer.

This comes amid reports in Turkey that the former Bundesliga attacker could be on his way back to Glasgow.

He said, “I’m going to drop in a wee bombshell exclusive here for Hotline Live. A list was compiled, and last summer, Rangers had the opportunity to sign Vaclav Cerny for what would have been a reasonable fee.

“There were all sorts of suggestions, and people who know nothing but like the sound of their own voice were saying, ‘Oh, this is £10m. It’s this, it’s that.’

“Actually, Vaclav Cerny had spoken to Barry Ferguson, and there was an understanding of exactly the compensation that would be required to make the deal permanent, and it wasn’t way above what Rangers could afford, despite what some said.

“Listen, my wee exclusive? I would not be the slightest bit surprised if Rangers are looking at doing a deal with Besiktas to get Cerny this summer.”

What would your concerns be about Derek McInnes replacing Danny Rohl?

Why Cerny would be a statement signing for the Gers

The case for Cerny at Ibrox is a compelling one, as he is a technically gifted and direct winger capable of operating on either flank.

He brings the kind of creativity and unpredictability that Rangers often lack in wide areas, especially with Mikey Moore returning to Tottenham after his loan spell.

Cerny notably netted five goals and provided eight assists in 30 Super Lig appearances for Besiktas in the recently concluded season.

However, the Turkish giants may be open to parting ways with the left-footer already, creating an opening for Andrew Cavenagh to negotiate a deal at an even more accessible price point.

For Derek McInnes, inheriting a squad that lands Cerny this summer would be a significant statement of intent, and Jackson’s revelation suggests the groundwork may have already been laid.
