Rangers new forward line looks like it is taking shape after weekend reports claimed that Sam Lammers was close to a move to Ibrox.

The Atalanta striker is said to be keen on a move to Glasgow but excitement isn’t what you would expect from Gers fans for a player who once cost £8m.

Reflecting on social media, David Edgar, of the Heart and Hand podcast, made a valid point about Rangers move for Sam Lammers – trust Michael Beale.

Writing on Twitter, the club media partner said of the Serie A forward’s potential move:

“His scoring record is poor but he must have something the manager wants. At end of the day, Beale knows what happens if he gets this summer wrong.”

There are two ways to analyse the interest in the former Dutch youth international.

  1. Goals.
  2. What he would bring to Rangers.

It’s an easy assumption to make that, if he was playing in Scotland, his extensive experience would stand him in good stead and should see the 26-year old produce better numbers.

We all know that it doesn’t always work like that though.

Michael Beale has employed a system where he has two forwards playing together, supported by an attacking midfielder/flexible winger.

For Rangers, playing with Cyriel Dessers – if he signs – Antonio Colak or Kemar Roofe, Sam Lammers would occupy one of the support striker roles, however, he can also play up front on his own.

He might be 6ft 4inches tall, but he’s not a target man, the reported £3.5m target can handle himself but that’s not how he plays.

Before his £8m move to Atalanta, Lammers was an outstanding prospect and the Italians are known for their recruitment, they don’t often get it wrong.

Not being able to adapt to Serie A or be as prolific there is hardly a reason to write a player off.

There is a reason why a series of big teams in top leagues have taken him on loan – the boy can play.

As David Edgar says, Michael Beale knows what he wants and obviously thinks that Rangers could land a bargain in Sam Lammers, if he gets it wrong, he could be in bother.
