Rangers appear to be closing in on signing Sam Lammers with the Atalanta forward believed to be heading for a medical.

That is according to a report from The Scottish Mail on Sunday (11/06, p100) as they claim that a deal for Lammers is close.

It’s stated that Rangers are expecting to finalise a deal to sign Atalanta forward Lammers this week.

The report claims that Lammers is due to arrive into the UK for a medical within the next 48 hours.

A deal worth around £3.5million is thought to be imminent with Rangers set to add an attacking threat.

It’s even stated that Rangers have wanted Lammers for ‘several years’ now as Steven Gerrard wanted to land him in the summer of 2020.

Lammers left PSV Eindhoven for Atalanta in a £7million deal with Rangers ultimately priced out a move back then.

Michael Beale looks set to land his man though and believes that he can get the 26-year-old back on track after a difficult few years.

Sam Lammers could be another Todd Cantwell for Rangers

We can understand some scepticism about Lammers.

Since making that move to Italy, Lammers has struggled with just five goals in 57 appearances.

Loans to Eintracht Frankfurt, Empoli and Sampdoria haven’t worked out for Lammers and he has sadly become a case of unfulfilled potential.

Lammers was a rising star at PSV Eindhoven, smashing 30 goals in 63 games for their B team before firing 16 goals in 31 goals on loan at Heerenveen in the 2018-19 campaign.

Now 26, Lammers has lost his goalscoring touch and needs to get back on track with this move to Rangers.

Does this not sound a little like Rangers playmaker Todd Cantwell?

Cantwell was a hot prospect at Norwich City, impressed many and was linked with big moves before losing his way and falling out of the Canaries side.

Rangers pounced and have seen the best of Cantwell, who now looks set to be a vital player under Beale moving forward.

Beale will hope for the same from Lammers and the 6ft 3in striker should share those hopes after a difficult few years.
