Rangers hunt for a centre-half has taken another turn with a new name in Zak Vyner appearing on the back pages.

The Bristol City stopper has experience of the SPFL from a previous loan spell at Aberdeen but his form for the Championship side over the last few seasons has seen attention peak as Michael Beale looks for further additions.

Rangers name has been mentioned as an interested party by Bristol Live and Zak Vyner, who has yet to sign a new contract, could be available on a cut-price deal.

Bristol City took up the option to extend the 26-year old’s contract by another season so that it now expires at the end of this current campaign.

A new deal has been offered to extend it further but, as yet, nothing has been signed with Nigel Pearson confirming that talks had taken place.

Rangers wouldn’t face stiff competition for Zak Vyner

Signing players from England, including in the Championship, has become more and more expensive in recent years and this is exactly the sort of situation that Rangers should be taking advantage of.

Premier League outfit Luton Town and Southampton have also been credited with an interest.

In terms of competition, it isn’t much to write home about.

Rangers can offer things that Zak Vyner has never experienced before in European football and the chance to win trophies.

The alternative is either a relegation scrap in the Premier League or another season in the Championship.

Vyner might not be a name that would excite Rangers fans, however, he wouldn’t be coming in as first choice.

When you consider Rangers current options, he probably wouldn’t be third choice either after Leon Balogun’s display against Livingston.

With Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Ben Davies, Leon Balogun and Leon King already in the squad, Michael Beale has a good mix of defenders available.

Davies has been linked with a move away and Vyner has a similar profile in terms of age and experience.

Since January, the Gers boss has been open about looking to add more depth to the defence so that a repeat of last season’s crisis is avoided.

Michael Beale may have said that he wants to bring in another defender but there isn’t space in the squad just now, unless a departure is imminent.
