Rangers are reportedly ‘at the forefront of the race’ to sign £35 million striker Fabio Silva on loan from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window.

Philippe Clement has already admitted that he wants Rangers to bring in a new striker as a priority next month. And the sight of Kemar Roofe limping off just 16 minutes into Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over St Johnstone – the experienced forward joining Danilo in the treatment room – will not have softened that stance.

The Glasgow giants have already been linked with Bojan Miovski, but Aberdeen have made it clear that they don’t want to sell. Kevin van Veen, meanwhile, appears keen to make a success of his spell at Groningen.

Rangers might not run into quite so many obstacles in their pursuit of Fabio Silva, however.

Wolves are likely to be willing to let the former FC Porto starlet leave. Silva may be keen on a fresh start too, after playing only 17 minutes of Premier League football since mid-September.

According to O Jogo, Rangers are at the front of the queue for the 21-year-old marksman. Old Firm rivals Celtic are interested too, and both clubs would likely be reliant on Wolves accepting short-term loan bids.

That cannot be ruled out, of course. An impressive spell north of the border at Ibrox or Parkhead could do wonders for Silva’s reputation, giving Wolves a far better chance of recouping much of that misguided £35 million investment.

16 goals last season

“I’ve spoken to Fabio about what we need from him,” Wolves boss Gary O’Neil tells the Shropshire Star. “A consistency in the way he works. We need to see a real intensity all week, and he needs to be really consistent with his actions on the pitch as well.

“Being more secure with the ball, still being a goal threat… He’s a young number nine playing in the hardest league in the world. So when I give him these things to improve, it’s normal.

“(Silva) has been really willing in the last few weeks. He’s worked harder than he was at the start of the season, he’s really trying to force his way in.”

Silva, still young despite many years of first-team football under his belt, scored 16 goals on loan at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven during the 2023/24 campaign.
