Plymouth Argyle have rejected an approach from Serie A giants Lazio for Michael Beale Rangers target Morgan Whittaker.
The Italian club made headlines this week after it emerged Lazio are interested in signing the English Championship attacker, who has scored 16 goals this season.
This had Rangers fans wondering what might’ve been with the Ibrox side said to have had a Morgan Whittaker approach rejected by Swansea a year ago.
But the latest coming out of the Pilgrims makes clear that Morgan Whittaker is going nowhere this January despite Lazio lingering in the background.
Plymouth reject Morgan Whittaker Lazio bid
Plymouth Director of Football Neil Dewsnip spoke to Plymouth Live about the Lazio interest and claims a transfer bid was “immediately rejected”.
This was after a conversation with Morgan Whittaker, 23, who is said to be “very happy” at Home Park.
“Last night we received an official offer for Morgan from Lazio,” said Dewsnip.
“Having discussed this internally and with the player’s representatives, the offer was immediately rejected. Morgan is very happy at Argyle and we maintain our position that he is not for sale.”
The interest from Lazio comes with Morgan Whittaker having netted 16 goals and laid on seven assists in 31 games this season.
Rangers failed with transfer bid
Rangers had a bid rejected for Morgan Whittaker back in the January of 2023 as Michael Beale looked to snap up the then Swansea winger.
Reports at the time suggested Rangers were willing to pay up to £2m for the attacker, who had been recalled to south Wales after a barnstorming loan stint with Plymouth in League One.
Despite then Swansea boss Russell Martin apologising to Rangers fans over the situation, Whittaker found chances at a premium with the Welsh side last season.
In the summer, Plymouth broke their transfer record to sign the forward, signing a deal worth around £1m plus add-ones to bring him to the south coast.
This came against the backdrop of fresh links to Rangers under former manager Beale.
Now emerging as one of the Championship’s brightest talents, goals such as this worldie against Sunderland earlier in the season suggest Rangers might well rue missing out on the forward.
