Midfield baller on Nils Koppen’s radar proves attacking quality perfect for Rangers

The squad needs a lot of work but there are still gaps that need to be filled and the midfield is one in particular that is short.

Joan Jordan was linked by Fabrizio Romano and that rumour seems to be growing stronger with Sevilla now more likely to accept a reduced loan deal.

The other name, dropped by reputable French outlet L’Equipe, is Oussama Targhalline.

Rangers target Oussama Targhalline proves potential

The 22-year old has just a year left of his Le Havre contract and is the type of profile that fits the player trading model drawn up by Nils Koppen.

As highlighted by X site Rising Stars XI, Targhalline is one of the top five leagues’ most effective midfielders under the age of 23.

In particular, only one player on the list wins more attacking duels than the the former Marseille youngster.

If the manager wants to play a high tempo and high press style of football, midfielders who are aggressive and can win the ball back quickly are key.

There is only one problem though, Rangers need to make room first.

Where Rangers could make room to sign Targhalline

Philippe Clement spoke during Rangers training camp in the Netherlands about having to sell before he can buy but that it isn’t always that simple:

“Everybody who is here is part of my plans. It is like that. Otherwise they would not be here.

“That is the thing with fans, I think it changed with having the PlayStation or Football Manager and you can say ‘this player I don’t like he needs to be out’.

“It doesn’t work that way. These guys have contracts. I don’t speak now about Connor and Tav, it is just in general, all over the world it doesn’t work that way.

“You always need to be with two parties. Every player falls into that category. Only Jack. If somebody comes with £30million or £40million you can replace him for that money.

“Every player falls into that category. We need money to replace him. If it is a good amount you can replace him and do something else. We will see.”

Targhalline is similar to Emtelle Can in terms of how he goes about his business.

Capable of playing as a deep lying midfielder or a number eight, the Moroccan is every inch the modern hybrid.

For Rangers, his role would probably be a more advanced one but there are two players in particular who are blocking his path.

Jose Cifuentes and Kieran Dowell both arrived last summer but it is fair to say that neither have made any sort of real impression at Rangers.

Cifuentes is struggling in Brazil with Cruzeiro with Dowell knowing that fitness is his biggest issue.

Clement needs his own players in and Rangers need players who are more reliable, and more suitable for the type of football that the club should be playing.
