Boca Juniors boast a substantial release clause over Rangers-linked Argentina winger Luca Langoni – with Portuguese giants Benfica the latest side to join the hunt.

Reports have suggested that Rangers are one of several clubs looking at Luca Langoni, a 21-year-old right-winger from a southern suburb of Buenos Aires.

The winger represents one of a number of links from South America in the January transfer window, with incoming recruitment director Nils Koppen admitting the club are very much active in these markets.

But for those Ibrox fans getting excited about a potential move for the talented young attacker, reports in the player’s homeland might just be about to pour cold water on the links.

Rangers-linked Luca Langoni has Boca clause

According to Argentine publication TNT Sports, Boca Juniors hold a €15m (£12.9m) release clause on Luca Langoni, who is contracted to the legendary club until 2027.

This is even more than the £10m which had been claimed in Scotland.

What’s more, Portuguese giants Benfica are said to be front of the queue when it comes to the Argentina attacker with the Lisbon side having their fingers long established in the South American pie.

The report also makes mention of transfer links to the likes of Sevilla in Spain, Nice in France, and Fulham in England.

The news of the release clause will come as a substantial blow to Rangers who – realistically – are never paying such a high amount for a player who is untested on European shores.

Argentina winger linked to Ibrox

Interestingly, Rangers were linked by something of an alternative source in Dom Smith of the London Evening Standard, something which does somewhat legitimise the links.

Young Argentine players are somewhat in vogue in the UK at the moment, with Brighton announcing Boca left-back talent Valentin Barco earlier this week.

Manchester City signed Argentine World Cup winner Julian Alvarez from fierce city rivals River Plate, whilst teenage talent Claudio Echeverri is set take the same route to the Etihad.

Chelsea splashed a fortune to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica whilst Old Firm rivals Celtic moved for Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus, albeit with underwhelming results.

Rangers may well be in the hunt for an Argentine option of their own in Luca Langoni but if the latest reports coming out of South America are correct, Boca Juniors could be holding out for a small fortune.

In total Langoni has made 45 appearances for Boca, scoring ten goals.
