Confusion surrounds Rangers links to Premier League club defender

There is some confusion surrounding links between Rangers and Burnley centre-back Bobby Thomas as the Ibrox club continue their hunt for a new defender.

Several digital tabloids ran with the apparent news that the Ibrox side were interested in Bobby Thomas, 22, who spent the final six months of last season on loan with League One Barnsley.

Now back at the newly promoted Premier League club, the apparent links appear to originate from the Patreon account of renowned journalist Alan Nixon on Sunday 9th July.

Nixon – who was first to break those Rangers links to Benie Traore – is widely regarded as a respected source when it comes to transfers and we’re not surprised the story has gotten traction.

But for suspicious Rangers fans who would’ve noted Bobby Thomas is a right-sided centre-back, when the Ibrox club’s pursuit is for a left-sided option, there’s been some confusion in the language used by the journalist.

Bobby Thomas actually linked to Queens Park Rangers

When Alan Nixon refers to “Rangers” in the report it would appear he is actually speaking about Queens Park Rangers, or QPR, who are clearly linked in the reporting.

According to Alan Nixon, Bobby Thomas is attracting interest from the likes of Michael Beale’s former side and Cardiff City in the English Championship.

By referring to the Rs as Rangers it’s had some taking it to mean the Scottish Premiership club and as a result we’re hearing Bobby Thomas’ name linked to Ibrox.

Whilst the Gers are interested in a defender, we’d be surprised if these links are anything more than a misinterpretation of the reporting as Michael Beale sets his sights elsewhere.

There have been extensive links to Nottingham Forest centre-back Jonathan Panzo in this window, whilst USA international Auston Trusty has also been regarded a target.

Rangers have just released Swedish international Filip Helander – who didn’t play at all last season – at the end of his contract whilst exit links persist around Championship-linked Ben Davies.
