Rangers first-teamer Ben Davies reportedly “attracts attention” from the English Championship as the Ibrox side’s hunt for a new defender steps up.

The Scottish Sun are reporting that the Rangers centre-back – who joined the club from Liverpool last summer – is on the shortlists of several sides south of the border.

This comes with much conjecture surrounding the future of Ben Davies, who suffered from a difficult first season in Scotland and who is yet to convince supporters despite making 38 appearances last season.

It’s not the first time Ben Davies has been linked with a return to the English Championship, the 27-year-old centre-back having impressed in the English second tier during his time with Preston North End.

Over the weekend it was being claimed that Rangers will demand to recoup the £4m they spent on Ben Davies should any would-be Championship suitors make their interest legitimate.

Leading Rangers fan media Heart & Hand – and specifically host David Edgar – has previously claimed he is “pretty confident” the defender will be sold this summer.

All of this points to Ben Davies leaving Rangers this summer, with club vice-captain Connor Goldson, Scotland international John Souttar and teenage talent Leon King the other centre-back options.

The news also comes amid extensive reporting surrounding Rangers’ interest in Jonathan Panzo, who is said to be closing in on a £2.5m move from Nottingham Forest.

Rangers have also been linked with Arsenal centre-back Auston Trusty, although the latest reports have claimed the Gunners’ asking price is over what the Gers are willing to pay.

With the Ibrox side potentially set to recoup all of the money they paid for Ben Davies only one year ago perhaps Rangers can leverage that Championship cash to resurrect the links to the USA international.

Rangers manager Michael Beale has also been clear that centre-back is an area the Ibrox side are looking to strengthen after a defensive injury crisis rocked the club this season.
