Rangers are now set to abandon their interest in Auston Trusty as the financial side of the deal is likely to throw a spanner in the works.

That is according to Football Scotland.

So, what are the details involving Rangers and Auston Trusty? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, Rangers were keen to bring the United States international to Ibrox after his impressive 2022/23 campaign on loan at Birmingham from Arsenal, where he was nominated for the Player of the Season award.

The 24-year-old scored four goals and provided two assists in 48 appearances for Birmingham.

Football Scotland believe Mikel Arteta is willing to sanction a permanent exit for Trusty as Arsenal already have the likes of William Saliba, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jakub Kiwior and Rob Holding to play at centre-back.

However, it is said that the fee and wage demands – which Football Scotland do not specify – are likely to be too expensive for Rangers to pursue a deal.

Therefore, it would seem any interest from Rangers in Trusty is now set to be shelved, unless Arsenal and the American himself lower their demands to push through a move.

Rangers must stay alert in Auston Trusty saga

While Rangers are right to ditch plans to sign Trusty if Michael Beale feels it will be too much of a financial risk, those at Ibrox must still keep in touch with Arsenal.

Why? Well, a similar situation apparently happened with Jack Butland, who has since been signed by the Gers.

The Daily Mail revealed that Beale was searching for alternative goalkeeping options after discovering that the England international’s wage demands were too high.

However, Butland eventually agreed to take a lower sum in order to play regular first-team football at Rangers, something Trusty could also do as he is highly unlikely to play every week at Arsenal.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as the Trusty saga may not be over yet.
