Rangers are now finally closing in on the signing of Jack Butland after a pursuit which has lasted almost a year.

A story from the Daily Mail claims that the England international is close to joining Rangers following a dramatic turn of events, after it initially seemed as if a deal had collapsed.

It was said that Michael Beale was looking for alternatives due to Jack Butland‘s wage demands – now, however, an agreement is close.

Rangers close to signing Butland

Well, this has been a rollercoaster of events.

The aforementioned story from the Daily Mail claimed that Beale was looking for alternatives after a deal for Butland broke down due to salary issues.

However, it has now revealed that the 30-year-old has agreed to lower his wage demands after hearing just how desperate Beale is to bring him to Ibrox.

Butland himself is also said to be eager to play regular first-team football once again, so was happy to compromise.

The £40,000-a-week man has not played a single second of football this season after finding himself behind Vicente Guaita and Sam Johnstone at Selhurst Park.

Butland consequently decided to join Manchester United on loan in January, where he has played second fiddle to David de Gea.

The Bristol-born glovesman is expected to join on a free transfer when his contract with Crystal Palace expires on June 30th.

Rangers finally nearing Butland deal

As aforesaid, this saga has lasted almost a year.

On May 28th 2022, a story from The Scottish Sun claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst wanted Butland to replace Allan McGregor.

However, the Englishman suffered a broken finger while playing for Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United, which ruled him out for two months and, according to Alan Nixon, also scuppered his chances of a transfer.

Now – however – at long last, Rangers seem close to finally signing Butland.
