Rangers manager Michael Beale has dropped a major hint that the club will move for a dominant centre-back in the summer.
The Gers support’s patience has run out for a series of failed signings and Rangers stalwarts who’ve repeatedly proven that they do not have what it takes to put the Ibrox side back on top in Scotland.
Speaking after the 5-2 win over St Mirren, with defensive frailties at the heart of both opposition goals, Michael Beale admitted when pressed that a dominant centre-back is in his sights this summer.
“Of course, I’m looking to strengthen everywhere,” Michael Beale told Sky Sports.
“In these last few weeks people have a chance to confirm my thoughts or alter them. The players who have the shirt have got to continue to play at a good level.
“It was a disappointing result last week, it’s a better result this week, but I’m looking at performance levels and in my opinion last week’s performance was better than this week.”
With Rangers doubts over the likes of Ben Davies, the Michael Beale centre-back comments will have plenty musing over who potential targets might be.
Michael Beale targets new centre-back
The club has had scattered success over the last few years but consistent success is what the supporters crave and now Michael Beale is tasked with delivering it.
There has been plenty of talk about summer signings with the Rangers manager clear that change is coming as his side toil to halt Celtic in their treble-hungry tracks.
Speaking after the victory over St Mirren, Michael Beale talked specifically about the centre-back errors in the match as change beckons at the club.
“I wasn’t happy with the first goal,” Michael Beale.
“I think it’s a great strike from O’Hara, nothing can take away from that, but we were sloppy, we had a four v three at one end, we don’t react in transition, then there’s a couple of crosses into the box.
“We were very slow in and around and we actually showed them it at halftime in terms of our attitude to counter-pressing and our defending.
“The second goal is very similar, it’s the second phase of a set play so they are little bits we need to iron out.
“I don’t want to use an excuse, ‘oh Connor Goldson isn’t playing’, Ben Davies and John Souttar don’t want to hear me saying that.
“Ryan Jack is not here, John Lundstram doesn’t want to hear me saying that.
“We have to better in those moments as a team for sure.”
All season long the position has been a troublesome one with Connor Goldson and Filip Helander currently laid up and Ben Davies and John Souttar also suffering time out of the side.
Rangers fans will expect stronger reinforcements to be brought into the club ahead of an exciting summer at Ibrox.
