Chris Willock signing for Rangers will create squad problem

If Rangers sign Chris Willock there will be an imbalance to Michael Beale’s squad.

As a right-footed, inverted winger, the 25-year old loves nothing better than cutting in from the left before delivering a killer pass or firing an effort at goal a la Ryan Kent.

As we have seen in Kent’s absence though, Todd Cantwell has been more than capable of carrying the responsibility of linking play with Malik Tillman – even if those responsible for scoring goals couldn’t finish their dinners of late.

Chris Willock is said to be keen on a move to Rangers and with all of the QPR forward’s goals this season coming under Michael Beale, and Neil Banfield being a fan, it’s easy to see why.

What is the issue if Rangers sign Chris Willock?

Michael Beale needs to trim a bloated squad of the injury prone, elderly and non-contributors.

Specifically, in Willock’s position he needs to make his mind up over who he wants to stay.

At the last count, there is Ryan Kent, Fashion Sakala, Rabbi Matondo, Scott Wright, Ianis Hagi, Malik Tillman, Todd Cantwell, Tom Lawrence and Alex Lowry, all capable of playing in the same position.

Some of them will have to leave, especially with Morgan Whittaker being reported as a target for Rangers too.

Kent’s Ibrox future is looking increasingly likely that it will be elsewhere and there has been interest in Sakala, Wright and Hagi in the past.

It’s also uncertain if Tillman will stay beyond his loan spell despite Michael Beale clearly hoping to finalise the transfer.

We need new faces and a new approach but it can’t be done with a wage bill on the rise and even more senior players sitting in the stands every week.

If Willock is the man to replace Kent as he departs, that’s fine, but there needs to be others following him out the door.
