Alfredo Morelos transfer speculation and Rangers return consideration

If Rangers had a prolific and consistent striker, the three points would have been secured against Hearts long before the final whistle but for those pining for Alfredo Morelos, he was neither prolific or consistent.

The Colombian’s goal scoring record during his time at Ibrox – 124 goals to be exact – was very good but he was never a 30 goal a season striker, and he never hit 20 in the league.

Just because he is potentially available following Santos’ relegation from the Brazilian Serie A, it doesn’t mean that Rangers should be picking up the phone hoping that the Alfredo Morelos of old could save the day.

Rangers need to swerve any thoughts of Alfredo Morelos return

This season, El Bufalo has managed just 76 minutes of football with the only meaningful statistic being the two yellow cards he has picked up.

Maybe the old Alfredo Morelos is still there somewhere.

He has scored seven goals in the whole of 2023.

The much-maligned Cyriel Dessers already has six since joining Rangers.

Alfredo Morelos was as much part of the problem Rangers haven’t been winning silverware as he was part of the success.

Yes, he scored in big games in the Europa League and he did have spells where it felt like he was carrying us but his record in Old Firm derbies and big cup games can’t be ignored.

His attitude to fitness means that his best years are now, unquestionably, behind him.

Alfredo Morelos should, at 27-years old, be at his peak, instead, he struggled to find a team willing to take a gamble on him even when he was available for free after leaving Rangers.

Would he be a better option that Kemar Roofe given his fitness issues? Probably.

However, there is no point in bringing someone like Nils Koppen to the club to support the Gers boss only to then given him tools that aren’t fit for the job and load his squad with players who aren’t suitable.

Just because Morelos has a rumoured relegation release clause doesn’t mean that there should be any hint of a return to Glasgow.

Peak Morelos was unstoppable, but when you have to go back in time nearly four years for that peak, it is only a memory, not a reality.

We have enough problems up front without signing an out of form, out of shape Alfredo Morelos who isn’t the player who once bullied clubs like Porto and Borussia Dortmund almost single handedly for Rangers.
