Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will be released for free if Brazilian side Santos are relegated due to a special clause in his contract.

The Colombian hitman, 27, put an end to a summer of speculation over his future by signing with the teetering Brazilian Campeonato at the end of the transfer window.

But such is the precarious situation of Santos, Alfredo Morelos and his agents have inserted a contract clause which ensures he can walk out the door in the event of relegation.

A least that’s according to murmurs in South America which have been leaped on by the Scottish tabloid press, with the likes of the Glasgow Times carrying the story.

Santos are currently 17th in the Brazilian top flight and gave their survival hopes a boost with an injury time victory over Bahia this week.

Alfredo Morelos has Santos contract clause

Alfredo Morelos was an unused substitute for Santos in the victory with striking alternative Julio Firch coming off the bench to score in the fourth minute of injury time and secure three points.

The 2-1 victory has eased the pressure on the side who stand on the verge of being relegated for the first time in the legendary Brazilian club’s history.

Santos currently sit in one of four relegation spots and sacked manager Diego Aguirre this week as they try to prevent leaving the wrong kind of legacy this season.

Alfredo Morelos might have a contract clause in his contract but the ex-Rangers striker will be tasked with halting Santos’ demise and playing a role in keeping the club up.

Having been without a club since May, perhaps the Brazilian side are building up the striker’s fitness as Alfredo Morelos looks to kickstart his career after Rangers.

Alfredo Morelos spent six years in Glasgow, playing 269 times for the team, scoring 124 goals and etching himself into Ibrox history.

The Colombian’s 29 strikes makes him Rangers’ greatest ever European goalscorer and it’s a record which will take some beating.
