Rangers will be in the market for a new right-back this summer to replace the departing James Tavernier.

Tavernier announced he’s leaving Rangers via Instagram on Wednesday morning and received messages from current and former players, as well as Steven Gerrard.

Only a few days ago, the Englishman gave an interview to the BBC to reveal that a new deal had not been offered to him yet, and he has now gone on record to confirm his departure at the end of the season.

Rangers News looks at three potential options to replace Tavernier:

1. Ryan Alebiosu

Ryan Alebiosu could be available at a discount this summer as Blackburn Rovers are facing the prospect of relegation.

If that happens, Rangers could turn to the Nigeria international as he would be a solid replacement for Tavernier.

Much like the Englishman, the 24-year-old is exceptional going forward and is good at putting crosses into the box.

He is also extremely athletic and would undoubtedly be a good fit in Danny Rohl’s system.

The fact that he is international teammates with Emmanuel Fernandez could help him adapt to a new club and he would even be open to joining if the centre-back can convince him.

2. Luca Stephenson

Charlie Mulgrew has mooted a Rangers move for Luca Stephenson this summer, and that could now be on the cards with Tavernier set to leave.

The 22-year-old Liverpool player has been out on loan at Dundee United this season and has put in an impressive shift in the Scottish Premiership.

Stephenson is primarily a central midfielder, but has proven just how capable he is playing as a right-back.

With Liverpool expected to be open to offers, the Gers may look to secure his services as they will get a proven full-back whose best years are still ahead of him.

3. Hampus Skoglund

Hampus Skoglund can be signed for £2m this summer and he could be an option considered by the Light Blues.

The Hammarby right-back is said to have exceptional passing and crossing ability, and he’s also always aware of his teammates’ movements.

At 22, he would be a good investment not just for the short term, but for the longer term as well.

Fernandez’s value has arguably increased tenfold since joining Rangers last summer, and the same could happen with Skoglund, too.
