Charlie Mulgrew has tipped Liverpool midfielder Luca Stephenson to thrive if he joins Rangers or Celtic.

The 22-year-old is on loan until the end of the season at Dundee United, where he has been among the first names on the team sheet.

This season, the Englishman has made 28 league appearances and has scored five goals and provided four assists.

BBC pundit Charlie Mulgrew has been impressed with Luca Stephenson

Mulgrew was thrilled with the performance of Stephenson in the Dundee derby on 15 March.

The BBC pundit was discussing the game with Steven Thomson, and having seen him in the 2-2 draw, he arrived at the conclusion that he could thrive at Ibrox or Celtic Park.

Stephenson is capable of playing at right-back as well and has played a number of games there for Dundee United this term.

There were even reports about Liverpool potentially re-calling him in January, but they could not due to a clause in the deal.

Speaking on The Breakdown, Mulgrew said: “Stephenson is good as well, from Liverpool. I think he could play for Rangers or Celtic.

Are Rangers likely to pursue Stephenson’s services in the summer?

Rangers spent £4m on Tochi Chukwuani in the January transfer window and may want to allocate funds elsewhere in the summer.

Nicolas Raskin continues to be linked with an exit, but if he stays on, Danny Rohl will have four decent midfielders to choose from, including Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande.

He would want there to be more quality in other areas of the pitch and there could be investments made to sign wide players, a right-back and a centre-back over a new midfielder.

If Rohl views him as a long-term successor to James Tavernier, which is unlikely, then it makes sense to pursue his services.

Also, with Stephenson’s success this season in Scotland, Liverpool are expected to demand a higher fee as they will capitalise on the fact that he has thrived against some of the big teams in the Premiership.

Rangers are better off strengthening other areas, and if the 22-year-old is available on a loan again or on the cheap, then they could consider entering the race for him.
