Steven Gerrard and Emmanuel Fernandez have sent messages to James Tavernier, who announced that he will be leaving Rangers at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old’s contract at Ibrox is set to run out at the end of June, and he has decided not to stay put at the club.
Tavernier revealed recently that a new deal had not been offered to him, but did not go on to state that he will be leaving for good.
Who should Danny Rohl name as the next captain? Let us know in the comments!
Steven Gerrard sends James Tavernier a heart emoji
Steven Gerrard has sent Tavernier a heart emoji and applause on his Instagram post in which he announced that he would be leaving the Ibrox outfit.
The Liverpool legend was the Rangers boss the last time they won the title, and the English defender played a key role in making that happen.
Tavernier led by example and showed up consistently, setting the standards for the rest of the team.
A number of the captain’s current teammates, too, joined the chorus to celebrate his 11-year career at the club.
Mikey Moore wrote: “Skip”, while Emmanuel Fernandez sent him a goat emoji.
Will Rangers regret not retaining Tavernier’s services?
Despite his lack of regular starts this season, it is undeniable that Tavernier is an important dressing-room presence.
He could have been kept on for another year as the second or third-choice right-back to help whoever joins in the summer to adapt better.
However, it looks like he wants to play regularly and could move to a lesser league where he gets those minutes.
James Tavernier is set to leave Rangers…
Will Rangers regret not retaining his services? Tell us why!
There is a chance that Danny Rohl and the hierarchy regret not trying to convince Tavernier to stay for another year.
Only time will tell if the decision is the right one, but it is imperative for the club to now replace him properly.
The search will likely begin in the coming days, as it is not going to be easy to replicate that kind of attacking output.
Hopefully, Rohl and Dan Purdy have some names in mind and they can then open conversations with them over a potential move to Ibrox.
