Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has been unlucky not to get as many chances as he would’ve hoped at Ibrox this season.
The former Hamilton youngster stole the show down south at Shrewsbury last season, hitting double figures in goals from midfield, winning a host of club awards and proving he could cut in the competitive male game.
But the form and quality that Rangers now possess in midfield has proven to be too big an obstacle at times for the likable midfielder.
As a result of the form of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara in particular, Rangers’ midfielders have faced a battle to cement a place in the first team.
Even the likes of summer signing Joe Aribo – widely regarded as one of the biggest and best assets at Ibrox – haven’t been able to cement a place.
Considering Scott Arfield, Andy King, Matt Polster and Andy Halliday are also able to slot into midfield, and even Jamie Barjonas recently signing a new deal, the challenge gets even bigger for Docherty.
Not that the midfielder is a bad player. Far from it.
Docherty scored in a bounce game as Rangers defeated a Leicester XI 3-0 in the week, leading to a club insider claiming the youngster had attracted the interest of visiting scouts [Four Lads].
Consider then the reported Docherty interest against that of Glen Kamara.
If Rangers planned on cashing in on the former Arsenal Academy graduate, would they really move on a player who’s chomping at the bit in his position?
