Reported Rangers target Stewart Downing signs for Blackburn

Reported Rangers target Stewart Downing has signed with Championship outfit Blackburn after his contract expired with Middlesbrough.
The 34-year-old winger was linked to Ibrox earlier in the year by reports down south [Teeside Live]. It sparked much debate over his suitability for Ibrox.
Many Rangers fans were against the prospect of a move. Those same fans will be breathing a sigh of relief that he’s moved to Blackburn

Downing signs a one-year deal with Blackburn, who clearly believe the former England and Liverpool teammate of Steven Gerrard’s can do a job for them.
Rangers are beginning to look a little overloaded on the flanks and will likely be moving a couple of players on.
Daniel Candeias, Eros Grezda, Jamie Murphy and Glenn Middleton have been joined by Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart, Jake Hastie and Sheyi Ojo.
The club also remains interested in resigning winger Ryan Kent on-loan [The Scottish Daily Mail (10/6, back page)]. That’s a transfer saga that could rumble on for a little while longer.

It means that Rangers are well-stocked in the wide positions and it’s difficult to see where Stewart Downing would fit in.
It raises question marks over the legitimacy of the links to begin with. Four Lads Had a Dream has previously rubbished reports linking Rangers to the player.
