Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland, who grew up supporting the Gers, has a chance to prove the Rangers recruitment team wrong at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

The Gers host the Terrors in a 3pm kick-off in the Premiership, with the home side looking to move another step closer to a 55th top-flight title and the visitors eyeing up the top six.

Steven Gerrard’s side won this fixture 4-0 in September and are big favourites to triumph once again.

Yet, United’s main man, Shankland, is finally hitting form in the top flight and may feel he has a point to prove.

Rangers were linked with the now-Scotland international when he was scoring prolifically for Ayr United in the Championship during the 2018/19 season [Scottish Sun] but apparently opted against making a move, with Dundee United instead snapping him up on a free transfer.

However, despite him firing his new club to promotion, the Gers once again opted against a move, and instead turned to the European market, signing both Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten.

Bears have been split on Shankland since the initial rumours emerged, with some suggesting he wouldn’t be good enough at the top level, while others have pointed to his natural goalscoring instincts as evidence that he would thrive at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old struggled to make an impact over the first half of the season, adding to the case built by his detractors.

However, he comes into Sunday’s fixture at Ibrox with three goals in his last two Premiership appearances and will surely lead the line for Micky Mellon.

If he is given the nod, Shankland will have the opportunity to prove the Ibrox recruitment team wrong for opting against swooping for him in each of the past two summers.

Rangers are without three of their four recognised full-back options for the game but have strong options at the heart of the defence and have been near flawless at home this season.

Gerrard’s side have scored 40 goals and conceded just once in the league at Ibrox, winning all 14 of their fixtures.
