Rangers ‘happy’ to let Danny Rohl leave as Keith Jackson calls out Andrew Cavenagh bluff

Danny Rohl may not be in charge of Rangers next season despite Andrew Cavenagh publicly backing him.

Cavenagh has publicly backed Rohl to remain as the Light Blues head coach next season, insisting the German tactician is part of the club’s long-term plans despite a catastrophic end to the campaign.

However, there are still questions about whether that public stance truly reflects the private reality at Ibrox, and whether Rangers would be quite so committed to keeping Rohl if a Bundesliga opportunity came calling this summer.

The 37-year-old was spotted in Germany at the weekend, watching the Saxony State Cup final between Erzgebirge Aue and his former club Zwickau, sparking further speculation over his future.

Keith Jackson calls out Andrew Cavenagh’s bluff

Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson has cast significant doubt on the sincerity of Rangers’ public backing of Rohl, suggesting the club may be more open to his departure than Cavenagh‘s statements imply.

While he acknowledges that keeping the former Sheffield Wednesday boss appears to be the stated plan, he raises the very real possibility that a game of bluff is being played.

Crucially, Jackson suggests that if a Bundesliga opportunity materialises for Rohl over the summer, Rangers may be perfectly happy to part ways with their head coach.

With Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen credited with interest in Rohl, the journalist suspects Cavenagh is positioning the club to be in the best position to secure a handsome compensation package.

He wrote in the Daily Record: “That [Rohl remaining the head coach] seems to be the plan according to owner Andrew Cavenagh, but it’s also possible there’s a game of bluff going on.

“If Rohl is offered the chance of a gig in the Bundesliga over the summer, Rangers might be happy to go their separate ways.”

What it means for Rangers

Jackson has maintained that Cavenagh may be lying about his stance on Rohl.

However, all signs point towards the German being in the dugout for Rangers when the 2026-27 season kicks off.

Rohl was heard demanding signings that would bring leadership to his squad from the Gers chairman after the defeat against Hearts at Tynecastle.

It appears Cavenagh is keen to deliver his head coach the tools required to lead the Govan club to glory, as evidenced by the quick signing of Lawrence Shankland.

Unless there is a twist, it is hard to see Rohl depart this summer.
