Andrew Cavenagh to make Danny Rohl U-turn as Keith Jackson drops ‘watch this space’ claim at Rangers

Danny Rohl might not be out of the woods just yet, despite Andrew Cavenagh emphatically claiming he will be in charge of Rangers next season.

Cavenagh put doubts over Rohl’s future at Ibrox to bed on Sunday, insisting that the Light Blues do not plan to change their manager ahead of next season.

This came amid increasing shouts for the former Sheffield Wednesday boss to be sacked after he lost four of Rangers‘ five post-split games and fumbled the title race.

There has also been mounting pressure on Rohl after his bust-up with James Tavernier ahead of the departing captain’s final appearance at Ibrox last week.

Is Danny Rohl’s treatment of James Tavernier a sackable offence?

He did not start Tavernier in his final Ibrox game…

Cavenagh may be talking up Rohl’s price, says Keith Jackson

However, Keith Jackson is refusing to believe Cavenagh was entirely honest about Rohl’s situation when he addressed the media.

The Daily Record journalist admitted that he usually takes the Rangers supremo at his word, but has his suspicions this time.

Therefore, he is not sure if Rohl will be in charge of the Ibrox outfit when the 2026-27 season kicks off, as many expect, advising fans to “watch this space”.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live, he said: “I’m just not convinced that Danny Rohl starts next season as Rangers manager, and I should be because I take Andrew Cavenagh at his word.

“He’s come out in very emphatic terms to say that it is exactly what’s going to happen, that Rangers want Danny Rohl, Danny Rohl wants to be at Rangers, therefore, it will happen.

“I just have a watch this space feeling about the Danny Rohl scenario.”

Jackson went on to suggest that Cavenagh’s statement might be a ploy to drive up Rohl’s value if clubs in Germany came knocking on his door, as reported.

He pointed out how the Ibrox outfit have made a habit of sacking managers and paying them compensation in recent years, and believes it would be great if they can pocket a significant sum instead this time around.

The veteran reporter went on to claim that Cavenagh would be “daft” if he did anything other than publicly back Rohl at this stage.

Jackson said, “If I were Andrew Cavenagh and I thought there was the possibility of a German club coming to the table this summer and asking for permission to speak to Danny Rohl, I’d be saying roughly the same sort of things, getting the same messaging out there.

“‘Danny’s going nowhere, we love him here. He’s our best chance of winning next season’s title’. Effectively, you’re talking up a price and rather than having to sack, and [incur] the expenditure involved in having to sack a manager and his backroom team because Rangers have had to empty out the coffers every year, isn’t it?

“So, it’d be a nice change of pace for Rangers if they actually managed to get a fee for the manager for once instead of having to pay out of their own pocket to get another one. If I were being strategic and if I were Andrew Cavenagh, I think I’d be fairly daft if I said anything other than, ‘he’s our man’.”

Danny Rohl could leave amid links to RB Salzburg…

Who do you see replacing him?

Rangers manager Rohl wanted by Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen

At 37, Rohl is still in the early stages of his coaching career. With stints at Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers already, he certainly has a bright future ahead of him.

Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that Bundesliga clubs are keeping tabs on the Rangers manager ahead of the new season.

Wolfsburg have been credited with a strong interest in appointing Rohl, who has previously worked with their sporting director Pirmin Schwegler.

More recently, the German tactician emerged as an option to take the reins at Bayer Leverkusen, while Union Berlin have also been linked.

Therefore, it would not be a surprise if Jackson’s prediction came true.
